Euro Nymphing Gear Explained - Tom Jarman
It is the John Shaner I knew. I was driving back to Syracuse on a Sunday night with my girl friend and son, and I broke down. John happened along and gave my GF and son a ride home from Binghampton. We had all taken a fly tying course from him.
Is this the John Shaner from the old days at Troutfitters in Syracuse?
Wonderful stories, great products!.
🌴 I use Cortland fly lines on all my reels but I ran into a problem I bought an 9’ 8 wt medium action graphite - Hurricane - “Bone” - fly rod from a flea market to add to my arsenal, for $20 bucks , also found a Chinese made reel ,die cast but I seemed ok , for $10 bucks , next day I went to the local tackle store and bought an 8 wtf floating Cortland fly line as I had a spool of backing already , I got everything set up went to the water and proceeded to cast it , it casted like crap ! This thing seems stiffer than a broom handle , it wouldn’t flex to build up the kinetic energy to push the line , so now what do I do ? I do have a spare 9-10 WFD Cortland line do I try it to see if it will flex this stiff rod ? 🤔🫲🏼😳🫱🏼
🌴 I’m so glad I use Cortland line , ( now tell me it was an 8 wt rod and reel ,) 😆
🌴 So I fly fish saltwater all the time and I mainly use Cortland lines ,my question is do fly line colors scare fish , as fisher man that spend numerous hours fly tying trying to deceive fish with with our creations using fluorocarbon leaders as so we get a some what natural presentation do fly line colors scare fish ? Shouldn’t we be trying to match our fly lines to the color of the water , it seems that fly line color is more for the fisherman to keep track of the direction a fish is going after a hook up , but does it scare say a big tarpon with only 9’ft of leader material ?🫲🏼😳🫱🏼🤔
Typically doesnt matter, some fly lines (intermediate) are clear though!
Is there any video on the indicator trout series?
Hey folks, the needle is a DaHo rigging needle. They are made in different sizes to accommodate different line thicknesses. My guess is this is the DAHN20060 for 150-200# mono. I would also recommend whip finishing the connection where the backing meets your fly line vs super glue using waxed rigging floss or 20# braid.
Will go try one!
Proud to call John one of my best friends. He's one of the nice guys.
To fast. Relax. You throw only loops.
Thank you gentleman for putting this information out there. I have spent 50 plus years with a fly rod in my hand and have fished through every iteration of rod and line development. This will help a lot of folks choose the right line for their rod and fishing application.
Go to (Tackle Direct) and look for the Jerry Brown splicing needle kit. Also tackle direct has You Tube videos on the correct ways to do the end loop and line connections!
Where is new euro rod? I was looking for it. Is it true new version is coming out?
best tippet ever
Do you guys talk about the new Cortland 50+ Series Saltwater Fly Lines in this episode? If so, what minute marker? Thanks.
“To soon…” so well put…!!!!!
I always have used the fair play an caught 20 fish in a day good rod I plan on reviewing it soon
Great interview - tons of knowledge right there.
John’s one of a kind. A true gentleman and a treasure.
Good rods for the money the reels not fancy but it has good drag simple design @cortland you should try to work with me id be more then happy to get your brand out there
I just picked up a tfo axiomiix 6wt for a deal and sa bonefish wouldn’t even load it. Grabbed my 7wt and it was ok. Tried a buddy’s reel with the new Airflo gulf red and the rod came alive. I looked up the grain weight and HOLYCHIT!!! It’s a heavy 7wt line!!!
Are there new stillwater full sinking lines comming?
I have the net and I love it its pretty heavy but still come in handy
Same! I love it for shore bass fishing!
Bought the 5-6wt and the 9-10 wt and the drag on the reels is not good and I fish saltwater, a better drag system needs to be engineered, I reely 👈🏼 expected more from Cortland 🤨
Still think this? I was thinking about getting the 9/10 wt salt
@@TieItAndFlyIt , yea the rod seems ok , the reel might be ok for small and mid size reds or snook , but anything bigger you’ll have to palm it , I bought a Redington behemoth 9-10 reel to put on it and I did it for two reasons the redington has a way better drag and a larger spool capacity, much needed on large fish the reel was $129 bucks
just glue , no serving at the splice end? and in the loop you leave tag end out, normally tag end of loop is buried in the braid and you dont need glue there at all...
Thank you Flip for sharing your years of experience and knowledge. You have elevated the sport of fly fishing to a higher level.
Does this line perform good in cold water?
Yes, it is designed with a supple braid core for cold-water fishing.
He’s one of the reasons I’m a professional outdoorsman…
Can you please let us know about the needle kit you are using so we can order. I'm the 4th person in the comments to ask but no one from Cortland has answered.
Daho Needles, available on our website
What tool is that, have you the name do I can order one?
Daho Needles, available on our website: www.cortlandline.com/products/daho-threading-splicing-needles
@@CortlandLineCompany thanks a million 💯💯💯💯
Bought two ,a 4-5 wt and a 9-10 wt , I feel the drag’s on the reels could have been made better , both will be used on salt water so will see how they hold up , Cortland has always been a good product, I do have a question! , with graphite rods the action on the rods feel stiffer , so do they have a heavier wt forward line in the fair play combo set up’s to match 🤔?
Ya didn’t say what wt the combo was , I got a 5-6 wt FairPlay the drag on the plastic reel sucks it doesn’t tighten down enough to stop a decent size fish , is.there any way to bend the spring to get more tension?
I just found this vid , I thought I saw all of flip’s videos , just bought a 5-6 wt fair play gonna have some fun with trout and red fish , maybe a snook to , 😁
beautiful, which pheasant is on the table 0:38 sec, please?
Wow! These guys are so hard to watch. 11 minutes of these guys jerking each other off before they get around to speaking with Jon. What a waste of a great platform.
Great podcast
I like this guy ...
Could you please put a loop into the fishing fly lines please it would be great to have it I speak to a lot of fishermen and that's one of the things missing in the fly line range.
Best tippet period!!!’

Thanks for having me!!
It’s crazy to see how far you’ve came, congrats buddy
Great episode, look forward to watching your channel develop and find its niche. Keep up the good work!
I have a Cortland Fairplay that I've used for more than 20 years. Even with a plastic reel seat, it's held up very well and caught a lot of small mouth bass.
20 years (21 now) is insane
